What We Grow

At Sunny Flowers, local and seasonal is at the heart of everything we grow. Everything is grown outdoors right here in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, with each variety arriving and disappearing in line with the seasons.

Here's a look at some of the flowers you'll find across the year. We're always trialling new varieties and adding to what we grow, so this is never the full story.

Anemones Delicate, papery petals around a dark centre, often one of the first signs that spring has arrived in the garden.

Calla Lilies Sleek, sculptural blooms with a clean, elegant line, equally at home in a simple posy or a statement arrangement.

Campanula Bell-shaped blooms on tall, graceful stems, a lovely soft filler that brings movement to any bunch.

Chrysanthemums Hardy, long-lasting and available in an enormous range of forms, from neat pompoms to big, shaggy blooms.

Dahlias Our absolute favourite to grow, and the flower we're best known for. Dahlias come in an incredible range of shapes and colours, from tight little ball dahlias to huge dinner-plate blooms. We grow over 60 named varieties each season, including favourites like Café Au Lait, Peaches & Cream, Caitlyn's Joy, Bumble Rumble, Polka and Wine Eyed Jill. This year we're also offering dahlia tubers for sale, so home gardeners can grow their own favourites; see our full variety list on the Dahlia Tubers page.

Delphinium Tall spires packed with delicate florets, a classic cottage-garden flower that adds real height and drama to a bunch.

Dutch Iris Elegant, slightly architectural blooms with a beautiful flash of colour at the centre of each petal.

Freesias Famous for their scent as much as their looks, with slender stems of trumpet-shaped blooms in soft, pretty colours.

Gladioli Bold flower spikes covered in blooms top to bottom, perfect for adding height and a bit of drama to an arrangement.

Larkspur Airy spikes of delicate flowers, a softer, smaller cousin to delphinium that works beautifully as a filler.

Lisianthus Often mistaken for roses, with ruffled, papery petals and a long vase life that makes them a customer favourite.

Peonies Lush, full and utterly romantic, peonies are one of the most anticipated flowers of the season. With their layers of ruffled petals and delicate fragrance, they never last long once they're available, so keep an eye on our Instagram to know when they're here.

Poppies Fragile, fleeting and utterly beautiful, with that unmistakable crepe-paper texture to every petal.

Proteas Striking, architectural and unlike anything else in a bunch. Hardy and long-lasting, they're a stunning statement bloom that holds their own in any arrangement.

Ranunculus Layer upon layer of delicate, rose-like petals, one of our most-requested spring flowers for good reason.

Scabiosa Also known as the pincushion flower, with a distinctive textured centre and dainty, long-lasting blooms.

Snapdragons Tall spikes covered in playful, dragon-mouth blooms, available in a huge range of colours.

Statice Papery, crinkled blooms that hold their colour beautifully even when dried, a lovely textural addition to any bunch.

Stock Loved for its incredible fragrance as much as its ruffled blooms, stock fills a room with scent.

Strawflowers True to their name, with a dry, papery texture and colours that barely fade, even once dried.

Sunflowers Bold, cheerful and impossible not to smile at, sunflowers are one of our most-loved summer flowers.

Tulips One of the first flowers of our season, and one of the most-loved. We grow a range of varieties each year, from classic single blooms to frilly parrot tulips.

Zinnias Cheerful, hardy and endlessly productive through summer and autumn, in every colour from soft pastels to bold, saturated hues.
